Apple’s announcement on Thursday that it would be introducing a new iPad textbook experience and iBooks authoring tool presents huge opportunities for technology in classrooms. The company is selling textbooks from McGraw-Hill, Pearson and Houghton Mifflin at a price comparable to print versi…
Some great ideas here for some tools to use in class!

Looks like the interest is there for this initiative, but this will be pretty niche for some time to come I expect. The install base for iPads is still fairly low, but it’s an exciting time to be in the education sector! I can’t wait to see some of the (hopefully free) books that come out of this.
I used to think that technology could help education. I’ve probably spearheaded giving away more computer equipment to schools than anybody else on the planet. But I’ve had to come to the inevitable conclusion that the problem is not one that technology can hope to solve. What’s wrong with education cannot be fixed with technology. No amount of technology will make a dent. It’s a political problem.

Apple’s plan to bring iPad textbooks to schools across America and around the world via iBooks 2 and iBooks Author is nothing short of a revolution. It could mean the end of giant, overused dog-eared volumes jammed into bulging backpacks balanced atop the over-burdened backs of America’s yout…
Haven’t had a chance to use this due to the filtering at school but it looks like a really good AfL tool. It has dedicated Android, and iOS apps but can be run from any web-enabled device.
Socrative is a smart student response system that empowers teachers to engage their classrooms through a series of educational exercises and games via smartphones, laptops, and tablets. I was actually surprised how simple and staright-forward this was to get up and running, infact the stated 3 minutes is an over estimation!
The basic idea is that a teacher logs through a mobile device/laptop/desktop and selects an activity which controls the flow of questions and games. Students simply login by accessinghttp://m.socarative.com through a web browser on any computer or mobile device and can instantly interact real time with the content.
Student responses are visually represented for multiple choice, true/false and Short Answer questions. For pre-planned activities a teacher can view reports online as a google spreadsheet or as an emailed Excel file.
Check out the video explanation below and give it a go yourself – get all your students involved, not just individuals!

I think the part of this article concerning gamification is particularly interesting for those in the education sector.
